Apple continues to climb in Europe

Below, you will find the operating system barometer for January 2010, comparing the data of France, Germany, Spain and United Kingdom. Apple has been successful in these four countries over the last year.
Cross section:
  • Study carried out from January 1 to 31, 2010
  • Cross section of 14,143 websites
Apple has gained 2.5 points in visit share over the last year in the United Kingdom at Microsoft’s expense

The graph below shows an estimate of the average traffic distribution registered on non-mobile websites in France, Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom by main type of operating system throughout January 2010, compared to January 2009.

With more than 9 visits out of 10 on average per website in each country, Microsoft still dominates the operating system market. Its share is the highest in Spain with 94.4% of visits on average per website in January 2010, followed by Germany (91.3%), France (90.4%) and the United Kingdom (90.3%).

Apple, its biggest challenger, has its highest visit share in the United Kingdom, with 8.5% of visits on average per website. The challenger continued to make progress in these 4 countries between January 2010 and January 2009 at Microsoft’s expense:

  • +2.5 points in the United Kingdom,
  • +2.4 points in France,
  • +2.2 points in Germany,
  • +1.6 points in Spain.

Over the past twelve months, Linux, in third position, has remained stable. This operating system is used the most in France with 1.4% of visits on average per website in January 2010.

The details of the different main types of operating systems are represented below.

In January 2010, Windows XP’s share fell under 50% in France and Spain. While Windows Vista gained a little ground (between 2.4 and 4.5 points depending on the country) and lost its place to Windows 7 which has been experiencing an upward trend since its release three months ago (between 6.2% and 9.5% of visits on average depending on the country).

Apple’s share climbed in these four countries with its Mac OS X Intel version, with a gain of between 1.4 and 2.2 points in visit share over the last year depending on the country. Mac OS X iPhone also increased (despite the fact that we took into account only non-mobile websites).

3 months after its release, Windows 7 has, on average, accounted for almost 10 visits out of 100 to websites in Germany

In January 2010, 3 months after its release for the general public, how has Windows 7 faired?

The graph below shows an estimation of the visit share of Windows 7 which was recorded on websites in France, Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom between December 2009 and January 2010.

In January 2010, on average 10 visits out of 100 to a website in Germany were made through Windows 7 (9.5%) when all different browsers are considered,

  • 8.1% in France,
  • 7.5% in the United Kingdom and,
  • 6.2% in Spain.

Out of the 4 countries that were studied, Windows 7 gained more than 2 points in visit share between December 2009 and January 2010:

  • +2.4 points in France,

  • +2.3 points in the United Kingdom,

  • +2.2 points in Germany and,

  • +2.1 points in Spain.

2009 was a great year for Apple in France, Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom with a gain of between 1.6 and 2.5 points in visit share depending on the country, between January 2009 and January 2010.

Microsoft experienced a slowdown, although it still dominates the operating system market. Nevertheless, Windows 7, released at the end of October 2009, seems to have been adopted much quicker than Windows Vista three years ago

Stay tuned as AT Internet Institute will provide a new operating system barometer soon.

Methodology:

We are interested in the average distribution of visits registered for a cross section of non-mobile websites, taking into account its operating system.

During cross section creation, we only consider the website if the established selection criteria are being respected. These criteria are strict; their objective is to eliminate websites with an anecdotal audience, a chaotic audience or whose collected data suspects a dysfunction in the measure.

For each country, we analyze the consultation of a website whose traffic is mainly generated in the country studied, and only visits coming from the associated country.
