The Windows 7 beta 1 version remains very confidential

Two months after its availability for downloading, where has the beta 1 version of Windows 7 gone to? AT Internet Institute provides the operating systems barometer for February 2009.
Cross section:
  • Study carried out from November 1, 2008 to March 22, 2009
  • Cross section of 135,775 websites
The Windows 7 beta 1 version is still just beginning,

The graph below presents the evolution of Windows 7 beta 1’s weekly web usage in visit share for traffic coming from France from January 19 to March 22, 2009.

Available for downloading from January 9 to 24, the Windows 7 beta 1 version accounted for 0.11% of French traffic from 16 to 22 March 2009, 2 months after its release:

and Microsoft continues to deal with Vista…

The share of visits for each version of Windows in relation to visits for the entire Operating System family is represented below.

Out of 100 Windows visits, 30.8 are attributed to Vista in February 2009 vs. 26.5 in November 2008. Over the same 4-month period, the Windows XP’s visit share generated 70.1% of Windows visits in November 2008, compared with 66.3% in February 2009. Windows XP still generated two-thirds of Microsoft visits, and hardly one-third for Vista more than two months after its release.

Over the 4-month period, Apple and Linux are the challengers who progress although their shares remain very confidential…

Over this 4-month period, Microsoft dropped by 0.08 point in spite of a growth between January and February 2009:

  • a 0.21-point drop between December 2008 and January 2009

While Apple rose over the same period:

  • contrary to Microsoft, Apple gained market share in January 2009 to reach 4.70% due to Mac OS X Intel and Mac OS X Iphone increase,

  • but Mac OS X Iphone lost ground in February… A little break in the rise of mobile OS?

And Linux:

  • a good start of the year 2009 for Linux which jumped about +0.07 point between December 2008 and February 2009.

Microsoft lost ground in 2008 due to Vista’s bad results, not a good way to start the year … Its challengers Apple and Linux then took advantage of this downturn…

Will Microsoft decide to speed up Windows 7 RC release whose beta 1 version remains very confidential? According to the last rumors available on the web, the new dead-line could now be April or May 2009…

Keep watching AT Internet Institute (ex-XiTi Monitor) over the coming months to track the evolution of Operating Systems.

Methodology:

Change on methodology in relation to previous studies: this operating system barometer was done on visits coming from France.
