Good performance for Apple and Linux versus Vista

The phenomenal launch of Windows Vista in January 2007 hasn’t done enough to ensure its success... The result is rather disappointing for a version which will finally remain a short term solution because Microsoft has already announced the beta version of Windows 7...
Cross section:
  • Study conducted from January 1, 2007 to December 31, 2008
  • Cross section of 195,509 websites
2 years after its launch, Vista still generates 3 times fewer visits than XP within Microsoft Operating Systems

Windows Vista Operating System has already been 2 years on the market. The result is rather disappointing: only 1 visit out of 4 in December 2008 (24 % of the visits). With the launch of Windows 7 in beta version 1 on January 9th 2009, Windows Vista will have only been a shorted lived version of the Windows Operating System for Microsoft:

Let us analyze the performance of other versions of Windows versus Vista. The share of visits for each version of Windows in relation to visits for the entire Operating System family is represented below.

Out of 100 Windows visits, 26.2 are attributed to Vista in December 2008 vs. 13.5 in January 2008, in other words, twice as much. Over the same yearly period, the Windows XP share of visits out of all Windows visits dropped by 12 points: Windows XP generated 70.8% of Windows visits in December 2008, compared with 82.4% in January 2008. XP remains by far the most important version of the Windows family with near 3 times more visits than Vista during the last month of 2008 …

Out of all visits for the Windows family, the Windows versions share other than XP dropped across the board over one year, except for Windows 2003 whose share (granted very small) is still rising:

  • Windows 2000 represented 1.32% of Windows visits in December vs. 2.08% in January 2008,

  • Windows 98: 0.28% of Windows visits in December vs. 0.66% in January 2008,

  • Windows Millennium: 0.11% of Windows visits in December vs. 0.26% in January 2008,

  • Windows 2003: 0.83% of Windows visits in December vs. 0.47% in January 2008.

Linux and especially Apple take advantage, to a certain extent, of this failure

With 93.3% of visits in December 2008, Microsoft still holds a great majority of the Operating Systems market. Apple (4.5 %) still remains in second position, followed by Linux (1.2 %).

But, as we have been able to see for the past surveys, it is the challengers which progress...

While Windows' share of visits has been dropping in 2008 (-0.34 point over the past six months, -1.4 point over the past 12 months), the share of visits for Linux and Apple is still rising:

  • 1.20% of visits for Linux in December 2008 which continues to rise started at the beginning of 2008 with a gain of 0.27 point since January 2008,

  • 4.46% of visits for Mac OS in December 2008, an increase of +0.36 point over the past 6 months and +0.55 point over the year. Its share rose each month with a little drop over December. The Mac OS X Intel continues its growth. Mac OS X iPhone, which has been used for one year, has multiplied by 5.8 its share of visits in 2008: 0.23% in December vs. 0.09% in July vs. 0.04% in January 2008.

Little fluctuations for other market players:

  • Consoles rank 4th with 0.10% of visits in December 2008: 0.06% for PS3, 0.03% for PSP and finally 0.01% for Wii.

  • Finally, Os/2 and Unix, with 0.01% in share of visits, share the rest of the visits.

The beta 1 version of Windows 7 remains very quiet…

The Windows 7 beta 1 first figures, measured by AT Internet Solutions since January 14th 2009, can be found below… its share remains naturally very low with 0.10 % of the visits on January 19th 2009, 10 days after its available download.

We can note a slightly higher share on Saturday, 17 and Sunday, 18 (0.13 %) due to the first tests realized in a more private usage than a professional one.

Two years after its launch, the results are obvious: Windows Vista will only have been a short term version, adopted through the lack of choice because it was already installed on the PCs most of the time (purchases of PC) and not approved by users for various reasons (lack of compatibility, slowness).

In this context, Microsoft lost ground to its competitors Linux and Apple which realized a good performance in 2008.

Would the launch of Windows 7 at the beginning of 2010 (but available as beta 1 version for download from 9 to 24 January 2008), announced as the true successor of Windows XP, set up a new deal?

Keep watching AT Internet Institute (ex-XiTi Monitor) over the coming months to track the evolution of Operating Systems.
