| Mac OS X iPhone rises in Europe |
|
| Below, you will find the operating system barometer for August 2009, comparing the data of France, Germany, Spain and United Kingdom. Whatever country, 2009 is synonymous with success for Apple… |
| Cross section: |
- Study carried out from August 1 to 30, 2009
- Cross section of 12,869 websites
|
|
| Apple gains ground in France, Germany, Spain and United Kingdom with Mac OS X Intel and Mac OS X iPhone |
The operating system barometer below is the subject of new approach. We now use systematically this approach.
This new approach allows us to analyze the average traffic distribution generated with an operating system on websites of our cross section. Let’s remember that in our previous studies, our « market » approach presented the distribution of all detected visits as generated in an operating system over all websites audited. The position granted to each website in the average calculation is equivalent regardless of its traffic volume.
Using data of a site-centric solution, we now choose to restitute results from the website’s viewpoint. Thus, website volume doesn’t affect its influence on the result. Instead of having market vision showing internet users’ behavior on websites with the most important affluence, we are now interesting in the average behavior registered by websites, whatever its number of visits.
We would like to draw your attention to the fact that you shouldn’t compare these results to those of previous months (and those of future operating system barometers). In fact, they don’t present the same analyze than that in previous barometers and their data therefore is not comparable.
The perimeter of the sites of this new operating system is being applied to mobile and non-mobile websites.
The graph below shows an estimate of the average traffic distribution registered on websites in France, Germany, Spain and United Kingdom by main families of operating system throughout August 2009.
Microsoft still dominates the operating system market with more than 9 visits out of 10 on average per website in each country. Its share is the highest in Spain with 95.3% of visits on average per website in August 2009, followed by United Kingdom (92.1%), France (92%) and Germany (91.8%).
Apple, the runner-up, is more present in the United Kingdom than in other countries, with 7% of visits on average per website. And the challenger progresses in these 4 countries between February and August 2009:
- +1.6 point in Germany,
- +1.3 point in France,
- +1.2 point in United Kingdom,
- +0.8 point in Spain.
Linux, on third position, remains stable over the past six months. This operating system is most used in France: 1.5% of visits on average per website in August 2009.

The details of the different operating systems by main families are represented below. In France, Germany, Spain and United Kingdom, Apple boosts with his Mac OS X Intel and Mac OS X iPhone versions between February and August 2009. Mac OS X iPhone almost reaches 1% of visits on average per website in France, Germany and United Kingdom.
|
| Mac OS X iPhone: between 8 and 15 % of Apple visits, depending on the country, in August 2009 |
The graph below presents the share of visits for each Apple version in relation to visits of the operating system family, on average per website in France, Germany, Spain and United Kingdom.
The Mac OS X iPhone establishes itself within its family, particularly in France, where its share represents 1 out of 7 Apple visits on average per website in August 2009. Its increase is remarkable in each of the 4 countries over the past 6 months:
- 15.2% of Apple visits on average per website in France in August vs 3.5% in February 2009
- 14.4.% of Apple visits on average per website in Spain in August vs 9% in February 2009
- 12.3% of Apple visits on average per website in United Kingdom in August vs 7.9% in February 2009
- 7.7% of Apple visits on average per website in Germany in August vs 4.4% in February 2009
The Mac OS X Intel still dominates within the Apple family, counting between three quarter and two third of Apple visits on average per website, depending on the country.

| Windows Vista still far behind XP |
The graph below presents the share of visits for each Windows version in relation to visits of the operating system family, on average per website in France, Germany, Spain and United Kingdom.
Regardless of the continuous progress of Windows Vista in these 4 countries, Windows XP is still dominating the market. Thus, more than 2 years and a half after its release, Vista accounts for a little more than 1 out of 4 Windows visits on average per website in Germany and Spain, and a little more than 1 out of 3 Windows visits on average per website in France and United Kingdom.
Windows 7, available in RC version since 5 May 2009, remains very confidential. Its share passes the threshold of 1% of Windows visits on average per website in Germany and France in August 2009.
2009 is a great year for Apple. Slowly but surely, it is gaining market share, no matter which of the given countries… Reasons for this success are the new version of Mac OS X Intel and the unchallenged iPhone.
Considering the fairly small success of Windows Vista, Microsoft now places all its hopes on the general public release of Windows 7 on 22 October 2009. Will this new Operating System relaunch leader dynamics? In any case, Microsoft tries to counter attack Apple on the Mobile phone market with Windows Phone and the official release of Windows Mobile 6.5, announced on 6 October 2009…
Stay tuned as AT Internet Institute will provide a new operating system barometer soon.

Methodology: As for all our future studies, we are now interested in the average distribution of visits registered for a cross section of websites, taking into account its operating system.
During cross section creation, we only consider the website if the established selection criteria are being respected. These criteria are strict; their objective is to eliminate websites with an anecdotal audience, a chaotic audience or whose collected data suspects a dysfunction in the measure.
For each country, we analyze the consultation of a website whose traffic is mainly generated in the country studied, and only visits coming from the associated country.
